What is Pace?

Pace is the number of possessions a team uses per game or per fixed number of minutes. A fast-paced team plays more possessions.

Formula

Possessions ≈ field goal attempts − offensive rebounds + turnovers + 0.44 × free throw attempts

Example

A team with 55 shots, 10 offensive rebounds, 14 turnovers and 20 free throw attempts used about 55 − 10 + 14 + 8.8 = 67.8 possessions.

Why it matters in a league

Pace matters when comparing teams: a team that scores 70 in 60 possessions is more efficient than one that scores 72 in 80.
