What is Rebound?

A rebound is when a player gains possession of the ball after a missed shot. An offensive rebound is by the team that shot, and a defensive rebound is by the other team.

Formula

Total rebounds = offensive rebounds + defensive rebounds

Example

A player with 3 offensive and 6 defensive rebounds has 9 total rebounds.

Why it matters in a league

Rebounds are only recorded when the scorekeeper marks them, so leagues that keep detailed box scores can rank rebounders and measure how many second chances a team gets.
