What is Usage rate?

Usage rate estimates the percentage of a team's possessions that a player ends with a shot, a free throw trip or a turnover while they are on the court.

Formula

USG% = 100 × ((FGA + 0.44 × FTA + TO) × (team minutes ÷ 5)) ÷ (player minutes × (team FGA + 0.44 × team FTA + team TO))

Example

A player who ends 8 possessions on a night when their team ends 40 while they are on court has a usage near 20%.

Why it matters in a league

A high usage rate with a low true shooting percentage can mean a player takes shots the team would be better off giving to someone else.
