What is Field goal percentage (FG%)?
Field goal percentage is the share of shot attempts from the floor that go in. It counts two-pointers and three-pointers equally and leaves out free throws.
Formula
FG% = field goals made ÷ field goals attempted
Example
Making 9 of 20 shots is 9 ÷ 20 = 45.0% from the field.
Why it matters in a league
FG% shows shooting efficiency, but it treats a three the same as a two. That is why leagues also look at effective field goal percentage.
